2025 Puppies are ready for new farm homes!
We are helping to conserve the all-American heritage breed of weeder geese: the Cotton Patch geese, developed in the Southeast. This breed is calm, gentle and can even be friendly. They even tolerate being picked up off the nest while broody, though they hiss a warning. The breed was selected for heads-down grazing (important for weeding crops), for gentle temperaments and for color differentiation, even at hatching, to make identifying males and females easy from their first day out of the shell, onward.
Cotton Patch geese are good at making a lot of noise when they sense a disturbance, and still provide a great alarm service for the poultry pens! However, they are truly gentle birds and therefore, they are more vulnerable to predators. Even a fox, about the same size as a mature goose, can carry off an adult Cotton Patch goose. Predator protection is vital for keeping these rare, sweet American heritage birds!
We day-range our geese, allowing them free access around the farm during the sunlit hours so they can select their own grassy diet and help mow the pastures. At night, they are locked into pens for their own safety, with the dogs protecting them against tenacious predators.
The geese learn our daily habits and will call a greeting to us when we walk by, come when called, and remind us when it's time for bed! They are excellent parents and will communally raise the springtime goslings.
We raise a few clutches of goslings each spring, but only keep a small flock of geese to prevent overcrowding. Please email us to reserve a male or female gosling (specify preferences and we will try to work with you to reach your goals); goslings are $50 at hatching, with local pickup only.
